Finding Calm in the Chaos: Our Family’s Journey

Flat lay of sensory toys including fidget cube and weighted lap pad on cream surface for autism and ADHD

Our family’s journey while raising children on the autism spectrum is one of the most rewarding and humbling experiences a parent can have. As parents, with one of us on the spectrum with ADHD, the daily challenges of sensory overload, meltdowns, and finding ways to help our kids feel safe and grounded in an overwhelming world sent us on a journey we never anticipated. We tried everything — different routines, different environments, different approaches — and through all of it we learned more about our children, ourselves, and what it truly means to navigate a world that was not always built for minds like ours.

The Beginning of Our Family’s Journey

Our autism family journey did not begin with a clear roadmap. There were no instructions handed to us, no single moment where everything suddenly made sense. What we had instead were questions — endless, exhausting, middle of the night questions that every parent in this space knows intimately. Why is our child struggling in ways other children do not seem to? What are we missing? What are we doing wrong? Those questions drove us to search harder, research deeper, and eventually find a community of families who understood exactly what we were going through because they were living it too.

Our family was not broken. We were simply wired differently — and once we understood that, everything began to shift.

What we discovered along the way surprised us. The answers we needed were not always in the places we expected to find them. They were in the quiet moments when a specific texture brought unexpected calm. In the way certain tools seemed to speak a language our children understood better than words. In the realization that one of us had been navigating these same sensory differences our entire life without ever having the language to describe them. Our family was not broken. We were simply wired differently — and once we understood that, everything began to shift.

That journey is the entire reason Sensory Trove exists. We knew there had to be a better way for families like ours to find the right sensory tools without the endless searching, the wasted money, and the exhaustion of feeling like you were figuring it all out alone. We wanted to create the place we had desperately searched for during our hardest moments — a space filled with honest information, real experiences, and resources that actually help.

In the posts ahead we will be sharing what worked for our family, what did not, the sensory tools that genuinely made a difference, and the lessons we learned along the way. Whether you are a parent just starting this journey or someone navigating sensory differences yourself, we hope this space feels like the resource we always wished we had found sooner. We are glad you found us — come follow our journey.

This is Chapter 1 of our Finding Calm in the Chaos series. In Chapter 2 we share the story of our road to diagnosis — the signs we noticed, the process we went through, and the moment everything finally had a name. Read Chapter 2 here.
